Witness alleges threat from rape-tainted seer’s followers

A witness in the rape case filed against Sri Raghaveshwara Swami of the Sri Ramachandrapura Mutt has alleged that he received death threats from the followers of Karnataka’s powerful seer. The witness, who is a businessman and former president of the Akhila Havyaka Mahasabha, has sought police protection.
“The Mahasabha is organising religious programmes this weekend. The swamiji’s followers have threatened me against attending the programmes. As I am witness in the rape case, I need protection,” said MN Bhat Mudguni in his statement.
The seer happens to be the foremost religious head of the Havyaka Brahmins in Karnataka and a section of the community wants him to step down from the coveted post in the wake of allegations against him. But the seer continues to occupy the post and discharge all duties.
In June 2014, a renowned singer attached to the Ramachandrapura Mutt accused the seer of repeatedly raping her. Though the CID police filed a charge-sheet against the seer, the case is getting dragged because of various reasons. Last year, another woman, who studied at the Mutt’s institute, also accused the seer of raping her.
