Bengaluru: Pressure seems to be mounting on seer Raghaveshwara Bharathi who has been accused of raping two women disciples to step down from his position.
Samana Manaskara Havyaka Vedike – a group of Havyaka Brahmins who are associated with the Ramachandrapura Mutt on Saturday, have expressed the desire that the seer step down as his act has ashamed all the people who are associated with the Mutt. They further added that he has no moral obligation to continue as the seer of the Mutt.
Another aide of the seer, who also happens to be a disciple of the Mutt has revealed that since the last few years the functioning of the daily affairs in the Mutt took an ugly twist. The seer is expected to practise celibacy and maintain distance from women, rather the women devotees at the Mutt were made to dance and sing in front of the seer a practice that no other seer indulged in the past.
The same aide further said that they were shocked to know of the repeated rape that Premalatha and Diwakar Shastry, both of who were ardent and disciplined devotees of the Mutt, were subjected to by the seer.
Raghaveshwara Bharathi, however when confronted with the allegations, termed it as a conspiracy and refused to talk to the Shastry family who had brought up the issue of rape in the Mutt committee first. The Mutt committee had advised the seer to go on a spiritual retreat in the Himalayas for an indefinite period. Though the seer had announced it during Chaturmasya (a four-month holy period) in front of about 10,000 devotees he later retracted from his words.
A blackmail case was also falsely implicated against Diwakar Shastry by the seer said the disciple who has said that he would stand by the Shastry family.
