Havyaka Samana Manaskara Vedike, a group of Brahmins in Karnataka owing allegiance to the powerful Ramachandrapura Mutt, on Saturday urged rape-tainted Sri Raghaveshwara Bharati to step down from the pontiff’s position in view of the rape charges against him.
“The charges leveled against the swamiji are serious in nature. Imagine the plight of the Mutt when the pontiff is made to stand in the witness box in the court. He has no moral right to continue as the pontiff. We welcome him back if he is cleared of the charges. He should step down immediately,” said Vedike’s Honorary President KH Srinivasa.
A leader of the Congress, Srinivasa said the continuation of the swamiji in the post of the pontiff would fetch disrepute to the Mutt. “There are thousands of followers of the Mutt. The swamiji should respect the sentiments of the followers of the Mutt and honorably quit,” he said.
The Karnataka CID police have already filed a chargesheet against the seer in a rape case. He is accused of repeatedly raping a singer attached to the Mutt. The investigation into a second rape complaint filed by another woman is being probed.
