Nearly 13 months after it began a probe into the allegations of sexual harassment against Raghaveshwara Bharati, the head pontiff of the Sri Ramachandrapura Mutt in Karnataka, the police Saturday filed charges of rape against him.

The chargesheet was filed in a case registered against the seer by a 45-year-old Rama Katha singer, who was formerly attached to the Mutt. The singer alleged that she was raped several times by Raghaveshwara Bharati during ‘Rama Katha’ performance tours around the country.

Inspector General of Police K V Sharathchandra said the chargesheet was submitted at the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) on Saturday.

Police said the chargesheet is based on forensic evidence and material facts collected by investigators. The DNA obtained from the garments of the victim matched that of the pontiff, officials said. Police have also cited the cell phone tower locations of the accused and the victim to establish that the pontiff and the singer were at a common location on the days when the alleged rape is reported to have occurred. The CID has listed 151 witnesses, including police personnel, forensic experts and others in the chargesheet.

The rape case was registered at the Banashankari police station in Bengaluru on August 26, 2014 by the victim’s daughter after the victim and her husband were detained by the police in Uttara Kannada following a complaint of threats and blackmail filed by a supporter of the pontiff. The rape case was later handed over to the CID. The CID team visited several places in nine districts in Karnataka and places in Kolkata, Jodhpur and Mumbai to collect evidence.

The pontiff will be prosecuted under Indian Penal Code sections 376 (2)(f)(n) (rape) and 508 (an act caused by inducing a person to believe that she will be rendered an object of divine displeasure).
